Things are changing too quickly. Society cannot keep up. Something essential is being lost. That reaction is not new and it is not foolish, but it has been issued about the printing press, electricity, the telephone, the automobile, television, and the internet, by intelligent people each time. When a complaint recurs that reliably across centuries, it is usually pointing at something real and misnaming it. The problem is generally not speed. It is lag.
Technology compounds and institutions deliberately do not
Technology advances quickly because each advance becomes a platform for the next. Software compounds, infrastructure scales, distribution accelerates, and the interval between capability and ubiquity keeps shrinking. Human systems work differently and on purpose. Laws, norms, institutions, education, and culture change slowly because stability has value and sudden shifts carry risk. A legal system that could be rewritten as fast as a codebase would not be a better legal system. When one side of that arrangement moves fast and the other is built to move slowly, tension accumulates, and we experience the tension as the technology being too fast.
The gap is not a malfunction. One side is designed to move quickly and the other is designed not to.
What people actually fear is unpredictability
Very few people are frightened of a tool as such. What unsettles them is losing the ability to predict how their life works. Jobs change before training adapts to them. Social norms shift before anyone agrees what the new expectations are. Power concentrates before regulation notices. Each of those is a gap between a change and the systems that would normally absorb it, and living in that gap is genuinely stressful. Technology becomes the visible symbol of the disruption even when the operative problem is institutional inertia, because the technology is new and legible while the inertia is old and invisible.
Nobody is afraid of the machine. They are afraid of not knowing what next year looks like.
The pattern repeats because the structure repeats
Every wave of technology creates winners and losers before society has worked out how to rebalance between them. Printing disrupted religious and political authority. Electricity reshaped the working day. The internet rewired how information moves. Each was followed by a period of turbulence, then by institutional adjustment, then by the arrangement seeming normal enough that the next disruption could be described as unprecedented. We consistently underestimate how long adaptation takes and overestimate how quickly collapse arrives.

A better question than whether to slow down
Asking whether technology is moving too fast produces an unanswerable argument, partly because nobody has a mechanism for slowing it and partly because the premise is off. The more productive question is which systems are failing to adapt, and why. Education, regulation, labor markets, and governance determine whether a given innovation feels empowering or destabilizing, and those are things that can actually be worked on. Blaming the technology is considerably easier than repairing a lagging institution, which is part of why the complaint stays popular.
It is easier to say the world is moving too fast than to name which institution stopped moving.
The one thing to remember
Technological acceleration is not going to reverse, which means the adjustable variable is adaptation rather than speed. Resilience will depend less on predicting which specific technologies matter and more on building systems that can absorb change without breaking. The generations that felt overwhelmed before were not wrong about the strain. They were wrong about where it was coming from.
The feeling is accurate. The diagnosis is usually pointed at the wrong half of the problem.
