Now the worry runs the other direction

In a growing number of countries the pressing demographic fear is no longer too many people but too few, with shrinking working-age populations, more retirees per worker, and the economic drag that follows. The same adaptive prosperity that ended the population explosion produced a new problem the original panic never imagined. Fewer people eases some resource pressures but strains the economic machinery built on growth.

The cure for overpopulation was prosperity, and it turned out to have a side effect nobody was warning about.

What to actually watch

Don't track world population as a single number; it hides the real story. Watch instead where fertility is falling and how fast, whether shrinking-population countries manage the transition through productivity and immigration or stagnate under it, and whether the resource-adaptation loop keeps pace with rising per-person consumption even as headcount levels off. Those tell you far more than any single doomsday or boom headline.
